People all over the world love a good car race. You have stock car racing, drag racing, Formula One racing, and all kinds of other genres. There are all kinds of organizations and associations for the sport. It’s often difficult to really follow any one of them. Racing apps isn’t the most popular genre ever and that’s disappointing.

There are so many racing leagues out there and not nearly enough coverage of them. Most apps focus on the same three or four elements of racing. The racing schedule, the race timing (pit stops and tire rotations), highlights, and racing results. Our selection focuses mostly on those things. Here are the best racing apps for Android! Of course, we also recommend Google Search, YouTube, and official racing sites because they really help find at least the basic information too. Please note, these are not racing games.

Formula One apps

Price: Free / $11.99 per month / $99.99 per year

Formula One is one of the most popular racing leagues on the planet. Thankfully, the organization takes mobile at least somewhat seriously. You get a few different racing apps from Formula One. That includes a general live streaming and news app. The live streaming requires a subscription, but the news part is free. There is also a live timing app for those who want the hardcore stats and metrics. All of the apps work pretty well and subscriptions are available in many regions around the world. The prices vary by region, but in the U.S. it’s $11.99 per month or $99.99 per year. The live timing feature requires a subscription to get all of the awesome stats.

Freader

Price: Free / $5.50

Freader1 is one of the few really good racing news apps. It covers Formula One news mostly. You can view things like race results, upcoming races, racers, and other types of car news. There are also video highlights and news stories as well. It rounds out the experience with race reminders, a calendar with the full schedule on it, and a light and dark mode for easier day time and night time reading. The UI could be a little cleaner and more modern, but that’s really our only complaint and it’s not a very big one. This is arguably the best news app for Formula One racing fans.

NASCAR Mobile

Price: Free

NASCAR Mobile is the official app of NASCAR. NASCAR and Formula One have a bit of a rivalry, but NASCAR is extremely popular in its own right. The official app has the kinds of things you would expect. That includes news, video highlights, a racing schedule, leaderboards, stats, and other such things. It’s a good first step for fans of the sport. However, it doesn’t offer much in the way of video streaming. Most races are broadcast on Fox, Fox Sports, and NBC Sports. We recommend a good live TV app like Sling TV, YouTube TV, DirecTV Now, or something similar to actually watch NASCAR. We have our list of the best live TV apps listed just below the first paragraph of the article!

Individual racing league apps and sites

App

Price: Free (usually)

There are a bunch of individual, independent, and smaller racing organizations. There are really only three ways to follow those smaller organizations. That includes social media, the official websites, and (when available), official apps. It’s hit-or-miss for basically all of them. We found an official app for USAC Racing, but not one for the NHRA. However, everything has an official site and also an official social media presence. We recommend booting up your favorite browser or social app and finding them there.

Most sports news apps

Price: Free (usually)

Most sports news apps cover racing to some extent. They usually only cover the big dogs like NASCAR and Formula One. However, considering that those are the most popular racing leagues, it’s not a super huge deal. Some ideas for you include theScore, ESPN, and Yahoo Sports. There are plenty of others. This is also a good option for those who enjoy other sports aside from racing. Most apps work well enough, although they may not have all of the in-depth news of an official source. We have our list of the best sports news apps linked at the button above if you want to see our list of those.

What is SIMRacingApps?

  • It's a Web Server used to host browser based Apps that are accessible using any device with a modern HTML5 browser.
  • It comes with over 50 Apps and Widgets, free, out of the box. See below for the most popular ones.
  • It has built in sounds for counting down to pit stall, when exceeding pit road speed, and when to shift.
  • The popular Atom/Electron client platform is supported where multiple configurations can be created.
  • It has a hardware plug-in interface, for Shift Lights, Sound, Arduino, Raspberry Pi or anything else you can think of.
  • It's a ReST interface for developers to access the SIM Data via an HTTP call from anywhere on your network.
  • There's a Voice Attack Profile on the download's page that uses the ReST API to control the SIM.
  • It's a HTML5 platform for other developers to write Apps and Widgets and share them with you.
  • It's a Java SDK for developing your own Java Based Apps.
  • And it is free, no hidden fees, not a demo, full 100% functionality available, open source, released under the Apache License 2.0. If someone has charged you for this software, they are in violation of the license and I'm sorry. You can always get it for free from the download links provided on this page.
  • Like us on FaceBook SIMRacingApps to keep up with new releases and tips and tricks. And join our FaceBook group SIMRacingApps Group which will be used as an open discussion forum.
  • Donations: I will not be accepting any donations. I made this decision so other contributors would not think I was benefiting from their work. What I may do, is create a Go Fund Me page to cover the costs of buying new SIMs and other costs. Right now, costs are almost nothing, thanks to GitHub hosting all of the web content for free.

Want to try it out? It's simple.

On the same computer where the simulator is running:

  • Download the latest version of the SIMRacingAppsServer...-signed.exe and save it where you can find it later. It is not an installer.
  • Execute SIMRacingAppsServer...-signed.exe. If you get a warning from Windows Defender or other Antivirus software, you can safely allow it to run as long as you downloaded from my download link. Do not accept it from any other source. Download the 'signed' version, but you still may get a waring due to certificate has not been certified by a public authority. It would cost me a couple of hundred dollars a year for certification.
  • If you don't have Java 1.8 or better installed, it will direct you to the download page so you can install Java. I have not tested this on version 10,11, or 12 as of yet. But, if you are running 64-bit Windows, you are better off installing the 64-bit version of Java. I have a Wiki page with instructions here. After Java is installed, execute the SIMRacingAppsServer....exe again.
  • Leave the server window open while racing. You can minimize it, but note the HTTP://... address in the title of this window first. You will use this address to connect to the server from the browser or client(s).
  • To overlay the Electron Apps/Widgets on top of the iRacing screen, you need to be in Windowed mode. Click here for instructions.
  • For Oculus Users, click here for help on how to embed the Apps/Widgets.

Clients can connect from any device connected to your home network
(including the SIM computer):

  • The Electron menu should open when you start the server, but you can also open a browser from your computer, phone or tablet (Chrome, FireFox, IE10, EDGE, Safari) and enter the HTTP address of the server. On phones and tablets, you can add the App to your home screen to get a full screen experience.
  • Click on one or more Apps or Widgets and start racing. Clicking the description will open the documentation for that App or Widget.
  • You can also embed URLs to an App or Widget in streaming tools like [Open Broadcasting Software (OBS)]. Click here for details on how to configure OBS.
  • For detailed documentation for a specific version, start that version's server and access the documentation from the main menu.
